What is an ABC Fire Extinguisher?

The ABC fire extinguisher is a moveable fire-fighting device manufactured to control various types of fires. That’s why, the manufacturer named it because of its capability to handle three different types of fires. These classes regard the kind of material that is burning. It is a multi-purpose fire extinguisher that is effective in all of them.

• Class A Fires

These classes include ordinary combustible materials like paper, wood, fabric, plastic, trash, and other solids that can capture fire. In addition, it uses monoammonium phosphate powder to coat the material, Cooling and suffocating the fire.

• Class B Fires 

Class B fires include flammable liquids such as oils, paints, gasoline, grease, solvents, and alcohol. Because It forms a barrier between the oxygen in the air and fire which potentially suppress the fire.

• Class C fires

These fires include energized electrical equipment like wiring, circuit breakers, computers, and household appliances. Furthermore, It is nonconductive, making it safe for use in electrical fires. 

How does it perform?

Due to the dry chemical agent (monoammonium phosphate ), the ABC fire extinguishers are used for many purposes. It is an achiever in fire suppression for many reasons. But when it is utilized, it makes a thin layer over the burning material and seamlessly stops the supply of oxygen and fire. Moreover, the mono ammonium phosphate undergoes a chemical reaction when heated, which helps to cool the burning material. The dual nature of control and cooling makes the Fire extinguishers functional in fire conditions.

The ABC fire extinguisher features nonconductivity and is used to fight class C fire.  

But It is very important to note that while these types of extinguishers are versatile, they are not proper for fires including cooking oils and fats or combustible metals.
